As a photographer I’m excited about the mass following iPhone photography has gathered, and in the wealth of iPhone Photo app’s found in the iTunes store there is Hipstamatic. A program that claims to make you iPhone digital photos look old school analog.

With Hipstamatic you’re given a few lenses, flash, and film styled digital filters that you connect to a old school looking digital camera that is displayed on your screen. You interact with your iPhone Hipstamatic in much the same way as you would a real camera, the images you take will look every bit as cool as you want them too, and really do give you an analog look for you iPhone snapshots.

I’m a little disappointed in the fact you’re forced to shoot through a small simulated viewfinder (see below image) and aren’t given the option to use the a larger or full screen shoot mode. This feature I’m sure was added to increase the feeling that you’re using a real medium format analog camera, but it ends up making it almost impossible predict how your photo will be framed up. The only other real issue I have is the of ability to import photos already in your album. It’s hard to say if this lack of importing is a oversight, or they just want to force you into using their app for your default camera. In any case, these are small issues with a otherwise amazing app.

Solid filter that give you everything they promise, the flashes are pretty much like most flashes in apps like this, an easy way to brighten a image without effort. The grain and color is what it should be, the app is easy to move around in (though it does run a bit slower then I think it should, but considering the fancy interface, it’s understandable) and it’s crisp and clean. Good look and feel, and it even lets you buy upgrades which consist of new new flashes, film types, and lenses. And for $1.99 this is an app every photographer should own.
