Drew drops in for this edtion of The List to give us his top 5 gear picks…
My Top Five in Gear usually depends on time of year where I live. But here you go:

Petzl Gri-Gri (Above)
“The GRIGRI’s self-braking function helps the belayer catch and hold a climber, making it great for working routes. Works equally well for lead climbing and top roping. Ergonomic design makes for smooth, controllable lowers. Also great for rappelling on single ropes – perfect for setting and cleaning routes. Self-braking system: if the rope suddenly comes under tension (e.g. in a fall), the cam pivots to pinch the rope, thus helping the belayer stop the climber’s fall. Usage is similar to that of conventional belay devices:
- paying out rope is done using both hands
- arresting a fall is done by holding the free end of the rope
- for lowering and rappelling, the rate of descent is controlled by the hand holding the free end of the rope (the rope is released with the handle).
For use with single ropes between 10 and 11 mm in diameter” - Petzl.com
Petzl Shunt
“Back-up rope clamp. Used below the rappel device, the SHUNT works as a rappel back-up and replaces self-jamming knots like the Prusik. Works on single and double ropes.
-Easy to install on the rope
-Smooth clamping surfaces won’t damage rope
-May be used to ascend single or doubled rope.” – Petzl.com
AGC Load Carrying Web Pack
Narrow, comfy, and I am continially amazed by what I can fit inside this thing. Check it out HERE.
Sure you’re going look like a head case, but every single person I’ve ever let try it out didn’t want to give it back. Great for snow sports or places where the weather is intense
And lastly, Sorel Boots. Don’t even bother with anything less.
