Independent, Marvel, DC, Darkhorse, if it’s out there, we’ll give it a look. And lets face it, there’s a lot of great reads out there. But these 4 books are our favorite reads of the year. Not all of them are new titles, not all of them even came out this year. But all of them stand out from the crowd and beg you to keep reading. Some books are fantastic, while others are mundane. But these with these 4 books, you can’t go wrong.
It’s been a good year for comic fans, With Norman Osborn taking over the Marvel world in an event like none other before it, and then over at DC Green Lantern has yet again been one of the stand out comic events of the year with Geoff Johns behind the wheel of the Blackest Night.
But like we said only 4 books we read this year can make the cut, so we looked back over the thousands of books we’ve read this year and found the 4 that we couldn’t put down. We also noticed some fantastic new titles this year and so at the end of our top 4, you’ll find our 2009 #1 Best New Series.
#4 Batman & Robin
This was a serious contender from best new title of 2009. When we heard that Robin was going to be Batman, and that Batman’s long lost son would be Robin, we weren’t too excited. In fact despite being told this was a great book by almost everyone I know, I still passed it up… Till Last month. I caved, I broke down and bought every issue, sat down and read them all back to back and what I got was one of the best reads of the year.
#3 MouseGuard Winter 1152
Yeah, Yeah we know it isn’t a 2009 release, but we hadn’t read it till this year so it’s close enough. This book is a shining example of everything a fairy tale or comic should be. A brilliant tale that warms your heart and lights up your imagination, David Petersen has created a rare work of art that leaves you wanting to read it again and again. It’s rare to see a story that both captures the heart and imagination of all ages, but Mr Petersen has done just that.
#2 Green Lantern
Geoff Johns continues to make GL one of the most exciting books in all of comics. From front to back, this man knows how to entertain. With fantastic plot lines and character interactions, every page draws you into the tale he’s spinning. With each twist and turn, with each turning of the page he keeps us on our toes. This is cosmic comic fun at it’s best.
#1 Invincible Iron Man

Matt seems to have broken the mold with this title, from day one of his run on this title he’s had our attention, but with his last two story arcs he gone from thinking outside the box, to just throwing the box away. It’s been a long time since I’ve read any title that left me having little to no clue what was going to happen next issue, but Fraction seems to keep us guessing with ease. Just when you think you know what he’s doing next, he throws you for another loop.
Sci-Fi action comics like Iron Man can’t be the easiest to write, but Matt Fraction seems right at home, it was hard to decide if this or Green Lantern would rank number 1, but in the end what landed Iron Man here, was one thing…. A complete lack of a safety net. Risks are taken, lines are crossed, and the story Matt Fraction is weaving leaves even the hardest to please excited and in nervous anticipation of the next issue. This multi Award winning title is without any doubt one of the best books on store shelves from any genre , writer or publisher.
Best New Series of 2009…
It was a long hard journey to decide what we felt was the best new title of the year, but in the end the winner was the title that changed everything….
Secret Warriors

I’ll never forget reading this first issue. I had a complete look of shock from the last panel. What I thought was going to be just another boring team style title, ended up being the title that changed everything in Marvel world as we knew it. Right from the first issue you know this is going to be a hugh title is shaping the future of the Marvel Universe, and on top of that Nick Fury is back kicking butt and taking names, which is perfectly fine with us.
